Online information can be used as evidence in divorce cases

Many people in New Mexico and beyond use social media sites. They can be fun to use and a great way of keeping in touch with people.

In addition, the use of online dating sites has grown in recent years. People throughout New Mexico may know someone who met their match using an online dating site.

While these various online platforms have improved our lives in many ways, they could prove to be detrimental as people are sorting through family law matters. For instance, the way people present themselves online could be viewed negatively in terms of their parenting abilities. Online information could end up negatively impacting a person’s child custody case.

Close to 60 percent of surveyed lawyers say they have seen more online information being used as evidence in divorce cases, according to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. Specifically, they have seen information obtained from dating websites used in divorce cases. In some cases, people lied about their status as parents.

It is usually best to remain relatively quiet on social media sites during a divorce. In addition, waiting until a divorce is finalized to hop on dating sites may be a wise choice.

People in Albuquerque who have gone through a divorce know that people may be forced to settle complex matters. Unfortunately, Internet sites and the information on those sites can make the divorce process even more complex. Thankfully, people don’t have to endure a divorce by themselves. A legal professional is often able to help guide people through the process.
