Actor struggling to pay alimony and child support

Most couples in New Mexico and others living elsewhere expect that their marriages will last. However, various factors may lead certain couples to pursue divorce.

There are many things to consider when a couple decides to part ways. One of the issues that may come up is spousal support. Unlike child support, there is no set formula for determining spousal support. Instead, judges will look at a variety of factors to determine whether or not spousal support is necessary and how much one party should pay.

A family law judge may consider whether or not the couple has children together. In addition, a judge will consider the length of the couple's marriage and each spouse's future earning potential.

Albuquerque residents may be familiar with actor Brendan Fraser. In 2009, he was ordered to pay alimony and child support to his former wife. Those payments reportedly add up to $900,000 a year.

The actor is best known for his role in "George of the Jungle." While he was once worth millions, he is now requesting that the court lower his alimony and child support payments.

People are often relieved after their divorce is finalized. It may finally give people a chance to move on with their lives. However, New Mexico residents should know that modifications to child support and spousal support can be granted in certain situations. After all, the loss of a job or serious illness can drastically change an individual's finances.

Whether people are beginning the divorce process or looking to request a modification, family law issues can be complex. New Mexico residents are often best served working with an experienced divorce attorney.
